Onyx - Types and properties

Types and properties of onyx
The definition of the word Onyx once again is derived from the Greek word Όνυχας, that literally means nail and metaphorically means something so thin that is translucent.
As a natural stone it is a fused variety of chalcedony (a type of silicate mineral). This type of natural stone is mirror shaped and takes up a magnificent gloss polish. Since ancient times onyx is considered a premium natural stone and comes in a higher price compared to other stones.
Thus, its use has to do mostly with interior decoration. At the same time it is one of the stronger natural stones and most durable. Finally, Onyx is a translucent material and most designers apply light on the back slab side and the outcome is an amazing result.
